What Do Those Air Conditioner Filters Do?

The job of the filter is to remove particles from the air stream to both keep the air conditioning system clean and to remove particles from the air.


Almost every air conditioning system has a filter upstream of the evaporator coil. This can be in the return grille or in special slots in the duct system and can be a fuzzy-looking or a folded paper filter.

As the filter does its job, it gets loaded with more and more particles. This is actually a good thing and makes the system more efficient, but it also increases resistance and reducing airflow. When this happens, it is time to change the filter. How long it will take to happen depends on how dirty the air is and how big the filter is.


If you don’t change the filter, air flow will decrease and the system won’t perform as well. Not only that, but if the filter is too dirty, it starts to become a source or air pollution itself.

If you take the filter out completely, you would solve the low air flow problem, but this victory would be short lived. The particles that the filter would have taken out will now build up on your evaporator coil and eventually cause it to fail. Replacing it with a new filter is a much cheaper option.

5 Common Air Conditioner Issues in Winter

Autumn leaves are now appearing and winter is quickly approaching.

Homes, offices and retail spaces all benefit from air conditioning all year round and research has proven that productivity improves with quality air conditioned spaces. Workers perform better and customers feel better as we all like to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Some common issues for you to look out for and hopefully prevent throughout the winter include:


Always keep your units free from obstruction to ensure your system doesn’t have to work any harder than necessary. This is important for both outdoor and indoor units.

Make sure nothing is blocking the indoor vents or air discharge points to enable your systems to run as efficiently as possible.


Set your thermostat controls to a reasonable level (even when you first turn on your system!). 23ºC is a reasonable temperature for homes and offices. A temperature of 30ºC for example is excessive and strains units unnecessarily.

When temperatures are cold, it’s important to position the louvers on the indoor units vertically (or as vertically as is possible) to force the heat down into the room and achieve maximum efficiency from your unit.

If a fault code does appear, the common solution of switching it off and back on is often the answer. Be sure to leave the system off for 10 seconds before restarting. The manual reset is the first thing any engineer will try when called out so save yourself some money by trying it yourself first.


When running in heating mode, air conditioning units stop producing heat from time to time. This allows the system to enter defrost mode, which is necessary to prevent ice and frost building up in the condenser coil. If you are not sure what is happening, wait to see if they start producing heat again before calling someone out.


Room air conditioner units feature a thermostat sensor. It’s located behind the control panel and measures the temperature of air coming into the evaporative coil. If the sensor is knocked out of position, the air conditioner could cycle constantly or behave erratically. The sensor should be near the coil but not touching it; adjust its position by carefully bending the wire that holds it in place.


If you’re using your air conditioning unit a lot during the winter months you’ll tend to find your filter gets a lot dirtier. CAUTION: Is there a public walkway or footpath beneath the condensers? The leaking water can turn into a slipping hazard if it freezes. Divert the water and allow it to drain into a safe area.

Heat Wave – Why Is My AC Leaking?

The British summer has finally arrived, and while it could disappear as soon as it came, things are really hotting up around here.

We’re predicted 32C today, which is going to really put your cooling systems to the test!

Over the last week we’ve had an increased number of service calls, relating to air conditioning systems which are leaking water into the client’s premises.
On the cooling side of the AC system, the evaporator coil gets very cold. The idea is that warm air is passed through the evaporator coil, thus cooling the air down..which is then blown into the area you’re working in. This process creates moisture (much like the inside of your freezer).

The moisture that is created then has to go somewhere, usually outside of the building via a gravity or pumped drainage system.

The amount of moisture created can be exasperated by a number of things:

-) The refrigerant pressure in the evaporator is too low, causing it to get colder than designed and icing up
-) The air flow across the evaporator is restricted, for example because of a dirty filter or failed fan
-) High levels of ambient humidity

Anyway, this moisture has to go somewhere!

In summary, the water leaking from your ceiling area right now could be as a result of a number of different issues related to your air conditioning unit. Examples of these issues are
